JTHS Band Alumni Association Presents
Norman Macdonald Memorial Scholarship Award

Brief Description

The Norman Macdonald Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000.00 scholarship awarded to one student at JT Central and one student at JT West who plan to major in a music-related field, such as education, performance or technology.  The 2017-2018 school year marks the fifth consecutive year that these scholarships will be awarded.

The JTHS Band Alumni Association (BAA) proudly introduced a new scholarship award in the 2013-2014 school year.  The award is being presented in memory and honor of Mr. Norman A. Macdonald, JTHS band member, first chair French Horn for three consecutive years, student conductor, drum major, and graduate (JTHS Class of 1961) and is given to one senior band student from each JTHS campus: 1) JT Central, 2) JT West. The formal title is the JTHS BAA Norman Macdonald Memorial Scholarship Award and the amount being awarded to each student is $1,000.00.  These awards have been made possible by the generous donations of family and friends in Mr. Macdonald’s name for this specific purpose. The JTHS BAA hopes to continue to honor the memory of Mr. Macdonald in future years to come. For more information please visit – www.jthsbaa.org/about/scholarship

About Mr. Norman A. Macdonald

Norman Angus Macdonald III, born in Illinois to Norman Angus Macdonald, Jr. and Alice Harriet Austin, was a California resident for nearly forty years. Mr. Macdonald is well-known and respected in the local communities of classical music, financial consulting, and U.S. Marine Corps veterans.   He relished having his immediate family in close proximity.

Norman’s passion for and commitment to music played an important role during his lifetime and continues to live through the talents of his family.  Studying music and horn performance at an early age under the careful supervision and instruction of Norman, Jr. (father), he graduated from Joliet Township High School (IL), serving as principal horn player with the nationally renowned high school band, followed by an education at Louisiana State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. During this time period, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, completing two tours of Vietnam and performed with the U.S. Marine Corps Band.   Norman proceeded into a career as a music teacher in Louisiana and continued his personal virtuoso studies under the tutelage of Dr. Richard Norem in Baton Rouge while performing with the Baton Rouge Symphony and the New Orleans Symphony.  After relocating to Southern California, Norman performed with the San Diego Pop Orchestra and subsequently participated as co-founder and principal horn for the South Coast Symphony & Chamber Orchestra.

Mr. Macdonald’s unique qualities are best summarized in this quote by a classmate and life-long friend – “Norm had a talent playing the French Horn, but also was a very positive influence on others…..actively encouraging them to be better musicians and more importantly, better people. He was a loving Husband, Father and Grandfather. He had a great sense of humor and his use of puns was legendary. Because of his outgoing personality, his caring attitude and his sincere love for music, friends and family, he will be missed. It is very appropriate we honor Norm with this Memorial Award."
