September, 2007Well, it’s hard to believe that the concert is over! Everything came together in typical JT fashion, that is to say, just about perfectly. Everyone involved gave 110% to present the best Alumni Band Concert yet!
We’ve received so many different compliments and an unimagined amount of PR from the Herald News, both from their staff as well as our community. For those of you who haven’t seen the two articles recently in the Herald News, we’ll supply the links off of the website, as well as posting a number of pictures taken professionally from a rehearsal and the concert. We are looking the possibility of making print copies of any of the photographs available at a nominal cost. Please look on the website for more information as it becomes available. For those of you who weren’t able to join us for the 4 days of events, we started off with a Concert on the Hill with a big band style group with approximately 18 very talented musicians. We did a 40 minute or so set with a wide variety of tunes from the big band era, covering most of the major orchestra’s of the era. Joining us for these festivities were a number of members of the class of ’57, who were starting their 50th reunion celebration. We continued on Friday with the first of two rehearsals with the majority of the players and got our first taste of what the ensemble was going to sound like, and it was impressive!
Saturday was a busy day, what with preparations for the dinner in the evening and the final rehearsal for Sunday. The dinner was a great success, with about 70 people attending, and as people got comfortable, many stories were shared about recollections of the band, people’s times in the band and life in general.
On Sunday, we had a great turnout, both playing and in the audience. We honored 6 distinguished alumni, five of whom were able to join us for the festivities. Honored were LeRoy Shepherd, Ron Shreffler, Tom Goodwin, Marv Johnson, Russ Dagon and Terry Guidetti. Our conductors (Ted Lega and Ron Polancich) did an amazing job of building a two hour concert in 4 very short rehearsals. We also would like to thank the three sponsors, Nancy Buetjer, Janet Bigger, and Norma Parks, who announced the pieces. Most importantly, we want to thank all of you who participated, making our event so successful!!! It’s great to see old friends and make new friends.
As we have in the past, the concert was recorded and we have cd’s available for purchase. This years disk is $12/copy and are can be ordered by sending a check payable to Greg Ballak along with the enclosed form to 88 Abbeywood Dr. Romeoville, IL 60446. We’ve heard a good portion of the recording, and it’s turned out quite well.
Outside of the next regular meeting September 12, 2007, the next major event is our annual meeting. This year’s meeting will be held at Maurie’s Table on Glenwood Ave about 3 blocks west of Joliet West Sunday, September 30, at 6:00pm. The association will be providing dinner and soda, all else is up to you. We’ll cover business first, then eat and socialize. As always, the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary & Treasurer as well as one three year term for a Member-at-Large are up for election. We are always looking for people who are interested and willing to serve on the board.
Scheduled on September 28th versus Lockport, the varsity game is at 7pm. Come out and watch the football team play between performances of the JT Marching Band. Following the game, the JTHS Alumni Association is hosting a gathering at the new Heroes West out by JJC. For those of you who have the afternoon free, the Homecoming Parade will be leaving Joliet Central about 3:50pm.
This year’s final Friday evening home basketball game is against Providence Catholic, on February 22, 2008. More specific details as they become available, such as call time, and post-game events.
Finally, we have one last piece of business…that which keeps the organization running – your dues and your *help*!! Dues are payable after the annual meeting, however we will accept them at any point between now and then. Our dues year runs from Oct 1 – Sept 30.
When we ask for your help, we are quite serious, as we are already planning the events surrounding the JT Bands Centennial Celebration in 2012…five very short years! We have set a goal to have multiple concert bands as well as some other surprises that we are trying to set up. To do this, we need help locating people, contacting people and getting people out to participate.
Yours in music,
