Happy Spring, Alumni!!!
It’s been a good year for our JT bands. Following their winter
concerts, both Kevin and Mike packed their respective organizations
up and headed for warmer climes, namely Orlando. After a nice
twenty-some hour bus ride, both groups got a good start on their
Disney music making. Kevin Carroll and his combined bands performed
a concert at Epcot. Mike Fiske and the Central Symphonic Band
performed as part of Festival Disneyan invitation entry
competitionwhere they captured an excellent rating, first place in
their division and second overall out of the twenty-three
participating bands. The Central Marching Band took a solo march
around Futureworld at Epcot, and the combined bands took part in
Disney’s “You’re Musical,” a two and a half hour working session
with several of the Disney music and recording staff where they
ultimately recorded a three minute segment of Stravinsky’s The
Firebird set with the animation from Fantasia 2000.
Following their return from Florida, both bands participated in the
State of Illinois ISU High School Invitational Concert Band Contest,
where the Central Symphonic Band and both the West Concert and
Symphonic Bands participated. Following our bands great
performances, the adjudicators ranked the Central Symphonic Band
first in class 6A, with the West Symphonic Band second in class 6A.
Congrats to our bands for their accomplishments.
On the alumni front, we had another banner year joining the JT Pep
Band for our fifth annual game. This year we had approximately 20
alumni joining the JT students, where many spectators were very
complimentary of the group, and as Mike Fiske put it “we doubled the
sound of the band with only about half of the personnel.”
Apparently, age and experience do outweigh youthful exuberance.
We’re pleased to report that the alumni band was once again
victorious over Providence Catholic, but it was a hard fought game
which JT pulled out in the last 30 seconds to win by 3 points.
Following the game, the alumni retired to The Olde Keg for
refreshments and camaraderie.
Coming up this summer, we’ve had an invitation from the Alumni Choir
to perform with them on July 31st at BiCentennial Park. As forming
the concert band is quite an arduous process, the board decided to
continue the Big Band ensemble from last summer. This year we’re
going to mix it up a bit and make it more of a jazz band with some
newer charts for the performance. If you’re interested, please
indicate on the return form enclosed. Please come out and join us
for this event, enjoy the beautiful summer evening and for
refreshments at Cemeno’s after the concert.
The band alumni are moving forward into the 21st century. We’ve
created several online groups, one on Facebook, one on LinkedIn and
one on Plaxo. The links will be at the end of the letter so that
you can join us for more frequent updates, the ability to interact
with your fellow alums, to make suggestions for events and more!
Most importantly, we want to use these facilities to reach out to
other alumni that we’re currently unable to find through other
means.
Keep thinking about ideas and events that you’d like to see as part
of the celebration in 2012. We’ve been bouncing ideas off of each
other, really feel that we have a good start on what events we’d
like to see, and how we can make it something extraordinarily

We hope that you have a great summer; hope to see you at the park in
July, and at our upcoming meetings August 13th, September 10th and
the annual meeting September 28th. The regular meetings are held at
Joliet West in the library at 7pm, and the annual meeting will be
held at 2pm, with the location TBD.
