January, 2009 First up…the annual basketball game with the JT Pep Band!! Trying to raise our record to 5-1 after the last second loss last February, we’re once again joining Mike and his crew for the last Friday home game against Sandburg, Friday, February 13. Call will be at 5:30pm. Enter via “B” doors, wear your school colors and bring your school spirit!!!! This year there are a few changes to the goings on of the past. Seeing as our beloved Keg has changed ownership and is no longer the fine establishment that we knew and loved, we were at a loss as to what we should do instead. As we were discussing it and trying to tie into new ways we can connect with the bands and our future alumni, we decided rather than going out, we’d stay in! So, we’re going to order pizza and invite the kids to join us so that we have an opportunity to interact with the entire group. We’ll enjoy the ‘eats’ when we return from the gym. However, this does not indicate that those of us who decide to, may congregate elsewhere after the pizza is gone… Keeping with the social aspect of things, we’re scheduling a number of alumni social events in the coming months to help us connect with each other, the current students and parents and anyone else who has an interest in the JTHS band programs. Following each JT band concert (Sun Feb 15 & Sun Feb 22 for starters) we’ll meet for dinner at a location chosen at that time. If you’re there and want to join us, please do! Mark your calendars!!! Saturday, June 20 at 1:00 pm will be the first annual BAA picnic. We’re going to be inviting the current students, and their parents to be our guests. We’ve reserved a pavilion at Inwood near the golf course. More details to follow closer to the event. After the picnic, we’re once again talking about putting together a jazz ensemble/big band at BiCentennial Park like we have the last two summers. We’re looking for anyone interested to let us know so that we can start planning music and making final arrangements! Thinking a little farther out, we have some great news!! There are several new developments in the Central air quality (read air conditioning for those of you who aren’t aware of the facelift that Central has been getting since last May) project…first off, the band room has been outfitted with vents over Winter Break and I understand that there is more coming, including the office…it’s only taken eighty-some years!!! More importantly in our grand scheme of wanting to hold the Centennial Concert in the Central Auditorium, we learned late last week from the VP of the school board, who is also one our alums that the auditorium is scheduled to be completed this summer, so it’ll be cool in there for us when we need it! At the last BAA working session, it was also proposed that we consider having a catered semi-formal dinner in the band room during the centennial festivities, which sounds like a great idea…that one’s going on the front burner!!! Actually on the topic of the band room, recently Brad was sitting down with the Central building supervisor and the topic wandered to the band room and some of his thoughts. This is extremely preliminary, but he was wondering if there was a way to raise some capital funds via the alumni (and please note alumni as a whole, not the band alumni) to give the band room a facelift to bring it back to the feel of the “good old days” of the 30’s and 40’s. Meaning a complete paint job, repairs to the plaster, gold leaf where gold leaf used to be, retrofitting the light fixtures in the front columns to be lights again, proper lighting throughout the room, finishing new storage in the music library and a true band archive space in the balcony along with some seating for visitors wishing to observe a rehearsal. The idea has been brought to Lynne Lichtenauer’s attention, and should be discussed at an upcoming alumni board meeting. We’ll keep you apprised as to where this goes. There are a couple of administrative details that need to be discussed…it’s been brought to the boards attention that it would be nice to have multi-year memberships; we’ve listened to you and come up with two options that we hope you’ll find to your liking. In the future, membership renewals may be done in either five or ten year intervals. The pricing is as follows: 5 years - $45, 10 years - $80. These options will appear on the renewal form that will be mailed in July. The board has been discussing the possibility of founding a scholarship fund with the first issue to coincide with the centennial concert in 2012. We feel we have some good ideas that need to be fleshed out a bit more, and the first major question that came to mind was the issue of fund-raising. Realizing that we’re all far too old for selling apples, we need to come up with other options. Some of the options include a 50/50 raffle, working concessions at basketball/football games and anything else the membership may suggest! Lastly, we want to remind you of the different options that have been
created in the last year on several of the social networking sites. We have
created groups on Linkedin.com, Plaxo.com & Facebook.com. Many of you
belong to one or more of the sites, and we’re continuing to gain momentum in
the “Web 2.0” world. We hope to one day very soon be able to tie these into
a new alumni band website and change to a more netcentric method of content
delivery and to give you more and easier ways to contribute! JTHS BAA Board Friday, Feb 13, Alumni join the JT Pep Band for the JT vs Stagg basketball
game, 5:30pm Central Bandroom
